South Texas Strawberry Farming legend, Lole Garcia, Jr.
South Texas Strawberry Farming legend, Lole Garcia, Jr.

In South Texas, stories grow alongside the crops. And few stories are as ripe with legacy and local pride as that of Lole Garcia Jr., the inspiration behind our latest release: Strawberry Sunrise ‘58, a strawberry blonde ale brewed in collaboration with Garcia Farms of Poteet, Texas.

From Soldier to Strawberry Legend

Lole Garcia Jr. returned home from World War II a decorated veteran, holding both the Victory Star and Bronze Star. But it wasn’t medals that made him a local hero in Poteet—it was strawberries.

At just 26 years old, Lole traded his uniform for farming boots and began cultivating strawberries in the rich South Texas soil. In 1958, his produce earned him the title of Grand Champion, an award that not only reflected the quality of his work but the heart he poured into it.

That crate of berries helped put Poteet on the map—a small city now widely known for its annual Strawberry Festival and deep agricultural heritage. Lole didn’t just win awards; he won respect. And he kept farming for decades, eventually becoming the oldest active strawberry grower in Poteet before his passing at 85.

Crafted in His Honor

Brewed by our own Victor Montez, Strawberry Sunrise ‘58 is our tribute to Lole’s life, legacy, and love for the land. Brewed with fresh strawberries from Garcia Farms, this blonde ale is slightly sweet, creamy, and fruit-forward, with a gentle malt backbone and a nod to the spring harvests that defined a generation of Texas growers.

At 5.4% ABV, it’s light enough for a sunny afternoon and flavorful enough to make you pause—and maybe reflect on where you come from.

Strawberries from Garcia Farms were used by our brewer Victor Montez to make our Strawberry Blonde '58. Available only at the Alamo Beer Hall.

Now Pouring

This beer is more than just a drink. It’s a celebration of South Texas grit, community, and the quiet heroes who build legacies one crop, one crate, one season at a time.

Raise a glass to Lole Garcia Jr.—a veteran, a farmer, and a Texas original.

Strawberry Sunrise ‘58 is available now at our taproom. $7 per pour. Come taste the story.
